WE WORK IN RWANDA
About Rwanda
Rwanda, often called “The Land of a Thousand Hills,” is a small landlocked country located in East Africa. It shares borders with Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. Kigali, its vibrant capital, is the political, cultural, and economic center of the country.
Context: Genocide and Poverty
Rwanda’s history is marked by the devastating 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, in which more than 800,000 lives were lost in just 100 days. The aftermath has profoundly affected the social and economic fabric of the nation. Despite these challenges, Rwanda has made significant progress in recent decades. According to the World Bank, Rwanda is one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. However, poverty remains a major problem, with 38% of the population living below the national poverty line according to recent data.

Children with disabilities in Rwanda face unique challenges that require urgent attention. Although the government has introduced various laws and policies to promote inclusion and equal rights, such as the Disability Protection Act and inclusive education strategies, implementation gaps persist. These children often face barriers to accessing quality education, adequate health care, and social services. Rwanda is a country in dire need of partners in this area.
Key needs of children with disabilities include:
TIC Rwanda works tirelessly to fill these gaps by providing tailored support and advocating for the rights of children with disabilities, so that they can achieve their full potential.
